BISON Skin

Commissioned restoration

We (Magda van Veen and Tony Colijn) are the first owners of a bison skin, which was bought in 1995 in Santa Fe, NM, USA and transported to the Netherlands with a Federal export license;

The skin has been given a beautiful artistic composition by Indian artists of Sioux origin;

However, in 2018 it became so fragile due to dehydration and ageing that restoration would be a particularly difficult task.

During an intensive search we came into contact with artist Joyce van Heek.

In the first telephone contact with Joyce, her insistent questioning, artistic passion and expertise gave us the idea that our Bison skin could be in good hands with her.

We were strengthened in our conviction during the conversation with Joyce at the work table in her studio where the Bisonskin was stretched out. We left – without skin – in complete confidence that Joyce would be the artist and craftswoman to give our Bison skin a second chance.

During the working process, Joyce maintained close contact with regard to progress and artistically and product-technically justified repair alternatives.

For this we have chosen together for recreation and not for complete restoration.

In the Joyce approach, the bison skin in its new, transformed form has even gained in aesthetic beauty and strength. In short, it has once again become a magnificent work of art.

With this creation – both conceptually and technically – Joyce has, according to our judgment, delivered a formidable performance and has shown herself to be a classy artist.

Wij (Magda van Veen en Tony Colijn) bezitten als eerste eigenaar een Bizonhuid, die in 1995 in Santa Fe, NM, USA gekocht en met een Federale export vergunning naar Nederland getransporteerd is;

De huid is door Indiaanse kunstenaars van Sioux origine van een prachtige artistieke compositie voorzien;

In 2018 echter, bleek zij door uitdroging en veroudering zo broos geworden, dat restauratie een bijzonder moeilijke opgave zou zijn;

Tijdens een intensieve speurtocht zijn we in contact gekomen met kunstenaar Joyce van Heek;

In het eerste telefonische contact met Joyce, kregen wij door haar indringende vraagstelling, artistieke passie en kennis van zaken het idee, dat onze Bizonhuid bij haar in goede handen zou kunnen zijn;

We werden in onze overtuiging gesterkt tijdens het gesprek met Joyce aan de werktafel in haar atelier waarop de Bizonhuid lag uitgestrekt. We zijn – zonder huid – vertrokken in het volle vertrouwen dat Joyce de kunstenaar en vakvrouw zou zijn om onze Bizonhuid een tweede kans te geven;

Gedurende het bewerkingsproces heeft Joyce intensief contact onderhouden over voortgang en artistiek en product technisch verantwoorde herstel alternatieven;

Hierbij hebben we samen gekozen voor herschepping en niet voor volledige restauratie;

In de aanpak van Joyce heeft de Bizonhuid in haar nieuwe , getransformeerde vorm zelfs aan esthetische schoonheid en kracht gewonnen. Kortom zij is opnieuw een schitterend kunstwerk geworden;

Met deze creatie – zowel conceptueel als uitvoeringstechnisch – heeft Joyce naar ons oordeel een formidabele prestatie geleverd en zich een kunstenaar van klasse getoond.
